Your camcorder battery has to be properly used and well maintained so that you can enjoy a maximum long life span of it. In fact, when you take good care of your battery, its long life is guaranteed. It is, noteworthy, that the battery life is shorter in a cold environment. Therefore if you are recording in a cold environment, the efficiency of the battery is decreased and it will be used up more quickly.

Try as much as you can to save the power of your battery. To ensure this, do not leave the camcorder in a standby mode when not recording to save the battery power. A smooth transition between scenes can be made even if recording is stopped and started again. While you are positioning the subject, selecting an angle or looking at the LCD screen or through the viewfinder, the lens moves automatically and the battery is used. The battery is also used when a tape is inserted or removed. Try to have sufficient camcorder battery pack power to do 2 to 3 times as much recording as you have planned.
Never leave the battery pack in temperature above 140ºF (60ºC), such as in a car parked in the sun or under direct sunlight. During charging or recording, the battery pack heats up which is caused by energy that has been generated and a chemical change that has occurred inside it, so this is normal and there is no cause for concern. Always remove your battery pack from the unit after using it, and keep it in a cool place. When the battery pack is installed to the camcorder, a small amount of current flows to the camcorder even if the POWER switch is set to OFF as a result the battery life is shortened. The battery pack is always discharging even when it is not in use after charging, therefore, you should charge it right before using the unit.

If the battery indicator flashes rapidly just after turning on the camcorder, the battery pack should be replaced with a new fully charged one. A brand-new battery pack is not charged. Before using the it, charge it completely, you do not have to discharge it before recharging. If you charged the battery pack fully but did not use it for a long time, it becomes discharged, so recharge it before use.
If the terminals are not clean, the battery charge duration will be shortened. Repeatedly installing and removing the it a few times improves the contact condition. Occasionally wipe the positive and negative terminals with a soft cloth or paper. Always keep the it away from fire and also keep it dry. Do not open nor try to disassemble it. Never expose the battery pack to any mechanical shock.

Which portable battery pack should I buy to charge and start my boat?
I need to get a portable booster power pack to charge my boat battery in the off season and be available to jump on the lake in case of an emergency. What should I get?
The two uses you have, are not solved with a portable battery pack. Off season storage requires a "maintainer" type charger. That is something a jumper pack doesn't do. Almost any of the portable packs can jump a boat battery, however might I caution that electronic ignitions and computer controls do not like "extraneous spark" like sometimes you get when hooking up a jumper pack. So, I don't take the chance. I charge the battery, or use the "maintainer charger" and never jump my battery.
