I'm a boy.have a 5megapixel Canon Digital IXY 60.
Lighting is key, and so is working within the limits of your camera.
Go outside, use a tripod to hold the camera, or place it on a sturdy surface. Some cameras work best within a certain distance, around 10-12 feet, though your flash may not be great at that distance. If you can get a freind with good movement control skills, that would be best. Otherwise just use the cameras timer. Dont zoom too tight, you can crop your shots afterward, if necessary.
Dont back yourself against anything, so you dont get any shadowing effect from lights or flash. Be well lit, but keep from getting over lit. Early and late in the day are good for full sun shots, as the lighting is less intense than at noon. Shade is good for outdoor, noon time shots, but dont get in a mix of light and shadows. Your camera wont expose properly.
If you want a mix of poses, place a mirror behind the camera, so you can see what your poses are like, and facial expressions. Practice poses and expressions at home, when you have time, in a mirror.
